Williamsburg Residents Divided on Vaccines, Despite Mayor's Health Emergency Declaration

Measles epidemic spreads to Westchester — 8 unvaccinated kids contract disease Lawyer: Challenge to NYC's vaccination order in the works

"Call your healthcare provider as soon as possible", Amler said: "The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective".

On Tuesday, the mayor declared a public health emergency requiring unvaccinated residents of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to get the vaccine or pay a potential $1,000 penalty.

David R. Curry, executive director of the Center for Vaccine Ethics and Policy, told China Daily: "Once your child is exposed and has measles, there is no better convincing argument to parents who may be questioning whether vaccinations work than when they have to come to grips with the fact that their child, because they were unvaccinated, suddenly has a potentially unsafe disease". But a judge last week overturned it, saying it's not yet a clear emergency. If New Yorkers fail to take up the offer, they face $1,000 fines.

Indeed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was quick to declare the city's action "legally questionable" and "a serious First Amendment issue" - though his failure to suggest any practical alternative suggests this was mostly his usual automatic dumping-on-de Blasio.

"'If we catch people early enough, we can give them medication", Kiernan said.

Mary Anderson, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County's Health and Human Services Department, noted that in the Washington region it is easy to find people who live in one state, travel to work in the other and then stop in Washington to eat or shop.

"We try always to respect religious rights, religious customs, but when it comes to public health, when we see a problem emerge, we have to deal with it aggressively", de Blasio said.

"Utahns don't need to panic, but rather carefully consider their vaccination status", she said, adding it isn't too late to get the vaccine.

Officials said their efforts have paid off with 8,000 additional vaccinations in affected neighborhoods compared with the prior year.

The year is already shaping up to be one of the worst for measles outbreaks across the nation.

This outbreak is a result of mistrust amongst the residents which did not believe in providing vaccine to the children.

Ireland's Minister for Health TD Simon Harris has said he "instinctively agrees" that healthy, unvaccinated children should be banned from attending schools.

"Once you delay it a few months, you exponentially increase the vector for infection", said Begun, who said families of eight to 10 children are typical in his practice.

"I haven't had anyone come to me and point out why the Bible opposes vaccination, but there are some who simply don't want to receive it", Coffey said. "I think it will help in getting the community covered", he said.

The federal agency says that disease transmission for the recent cases likely originated in countries where measles is more common - throughout Europe, Asia, the Pacific and Africa and the Philippines - places people commonly visit. Six of the children are siblings.
