India says the debris is harmless and will not affect any other satellites or the ISS.

The Chinese demonstration was carried out at 800 kilometers and was widely condemned because of the resulting space debris, which will likely stay in orbit for decades or longer. What has been described as "unacceptable" by the NASA chief is that the risk of collision between the ISS and the pieces of the destroyed satellite has increased by 44 per cent over a period of 10 days as 24 of the pieces "are going above the apogee of the ISS".

It's not clear how many pieces of debris were created in the test, said Bridenstine, who added that numerous pieces are large enough to threaten the ISS, but they're not big enough to track, reported Business Insider. We'll have to keep a keen eye on the global space community's approach towards India from here on out. "And that kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight".

India's successful anti-missile test was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a televised address to the nation on March 27. The conspicuous test, called Mission Shakti, was a demonstration of India's newfound capacity in space, and a warning to rival nations to stay clear of India's satellite fleet.

NASA and Combined Space Operations Centre reportedly identified 400 pieces of space from India's A-SAT test.

Delhi has insisted it carried out the test in low-earth orbit, at an altitude of 300km (186 miles), to not leave space debris that could collide with the ISS or satellites.

Pakistan has warned that other countries may now conduct such tests while reiterating that it remains a strong proponent of the non-militarisation of outer space. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back on to the Earth within weeks", it said. The objects pose a threat to operational spacecraft and the space environment. "All of those are placed at risk when these kind of events happen".

Bridenstine said NASA was preparing a request for additional funding to achieve the 2024 ambitious Moon landing goal.

Laura Grego from the Union of Concerned Scientists said the almost 2,000 satellites now in orbit are put at risk by such tests.

Indian officials said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure there are no pieces orbiting around the Earth.

After plans to land American astronauts on the Moon by 2024, four years ahead of its previous schedule, NASA now proposes to put humans on Mars by 2033.

"Destroying satellites orbiting in altitude bands that are heavily used for both military and civil satellites also can have ripple effects, producing unsafe clouds of debris that could stay in orbit for decades or centuries, disabling or destroying any satellites they collide with", said Grego in a statement.
