A key element of the SABRE air-breathing rocket engine successfully passes the first phase of high-temperature testing.

.

Recent tests on the precooler component Reaction Engines has built for its SABRE engine design have achieved air intake cooling of air up to 420 degrees Celsius (~788 degrees Fahrenheit), the air temperature experienced while traveling at Mach 3.3.

That's more than 50% faster than the cruising speed of Concorde - which used to make the journey between NY and Paris in around 3.5 hours - and matches the speed record of the fastest jet aircraft ever made, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.

The company's ultimate ambition is to incorporate the pre-cooler into its experimental Sabre engine.

British engineers have made a breakthrough in their effort to develop a "spaceplane" that could travel between NY and London in less than an hour.

Testing was conducted at the Colorado Air and Space Port in the United States and involved replicating the thermal conditions of a flight at Mach 3.3 - the fastest speed flown by the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane.

There are also plans for the aircraft to travel at 25 times the speed of sound and to take people into space and return to Earth for a fraction of today's costs.

A spokesperson for Reaction Engines told MailOnline that although this technology is decades away from use in passenger jets, the technology could be used in more immediate applications.

According to Mr Thomas, the firm's ability to keep the engine cool is a major revelation for the industry - Concorde famously reached speeds of Mach 2, which he says "was tolerable, but already the aircraft was getting quite hot".

It would then switch to burning liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen from on-board fuel tanks, allowing it to reach 25 times the speed of sound to enter space. This is one of the reasons why jets can not travel too fast, as they engine is vulnerable to melting.

It did this by successfully quenching a 420°C (788°F) stream of gases in less than 1/20th of a second.

"This is a hugely significant milestone which has seen Reaction Engines' proprietary precooler technology achieve unparalleled heat transfer performance", Mark Thomas, the company's CEO, said in a press release.

At high speeds and at high altitude, it would transition to full rocket mode, combining the fuel with the oxygen carried inside.

The tech is created to chill air in the inlet of high-speed turbojets for hypersonic vehicles and ultimately will form the basis for the company's Sabre engine for low-priced repeatable access to space.
