Theresa May Delays Brexit Yet Again, This Time For 6 Months

"This is our national duty as elected members of this House".

But with Britain's Parliament still deadlocked over whether to approve the government's divorce deal with the bloc, European Union leaders have postponed the Brexit deadline until October 31.

"The pressure on her to go will increase dramatically, I suspect", he said.

She urged MPs to "reflect" on ways to resolve the deadlock over Brexit during their Easter recess.

But Work and Pensions Secretary Miss Rudd has said she can not support Mr Johnson while he keeps the door open to a No Deal Brexit, according to reports.

Consensus, however, was in short supply.

Given that Britain's fractious Parliament has rejected her Brexit withdrawal deal with the European Union on three occasions this year, her hopes for a quick resolution could rest in large part on whether her Conservative Party-led government can find common ground with the opposition Labour Party.

When asked to choose between Mrs May and Mr Corbyn, 30 per cent said Mrs May would make the better Prime Minister, compared with just 19 per cent for the Labour leader.

And there was little solace for Mrs May on her own side of the House of Commons, as pro-Brexit lawmakers from her Conservative Party accused her of capitulating to Brussels.

"I think you know the answer to that", she replied. "Nobody has to stay but it is also a home and we are not going to kick anyone out".

Parliament has rejected Ms May's deal to leave the European Union three times. "Brexit has divided us, and there is no stable majority for anything".

EU Council president Donald Tusk admitted in Brussels after the marathon meetings wound down that "everything is possible".

In the Commons, the Prime Minister brushed off a call to resign from veteran Eurosceptic Sir Bill Cash who described her acceptance of the latest extension to the Article 50 withdrawal process as an "abject surrender".

No 10 is still hoping they can get a deal through Parliament in time to avoid the need for Britain to vote in elections to the European Parliament on May 23. The party accuses the government of failing to offer concrete changes to its Brexit blueprint.

Corbyn had harsh words for the Conservatives jockeying to succeed her who prefer a no-deal Brexit than a softer break, accusing them of setting up the country for a "dystopian future". He said the government was trying to limit the economic fallout of that decision.

Pro-EU campaigners argue that politicians have failed and the next few months should be used to hold a new referendum on whether to leave the EU or remain. Scottish National Party Nicola Sturgeon said in a tweet after the extension was granted that the British people should be allowed to "decide if they still want to leave".

The result was a compromise on the date, with a deadline of October 31 for Britain to leave, deal or no deal-on condition that May holds an election on May 23 to return British members to a new European Parliament that convenes in July, and that it pledge not to disrupt key EU decision-making before it leaves.

"The prime minister stuck rigidly to a flawed plan and now the clock has run down, leaving Britain in limbo", Mr Corbyn said.

"We're prepared to discuss all of these things with them", he said.
