This prompted the agency to look at its reports and data from poison control centers - in doing so, the agency found 35 cases of seizures that were experienced in the same time frame as e-cigarette use.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating almost three dozen cases of people experiencing seizures after vaping and is warning the public about the risk, the agency said Wednesday.

"We have reports indicating that some people who use e-cigarettes, especially youth and young adults, are experiencing seizures following their use", the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement.

"E-cigarette use behaviors also vary and users may deliberately or inadvertently inhale more nicotine than would typically occur", Gottlieb and Abernethy said, adding that e-liquids "have varying levels of nicotine concentrations, and some e-cigarette design features may allow a user to obtain high levels of nicotine quickly".

The agency announced Wednesday that it has received 35 reports of people suffering seizures after vaping between 2010 and 2019. Some seizures occurred immediately after using the device, whereas others happened a day or so after use. Indeed, a few of the patients reported use of other substances in addition to e-cigarettes, such as marijuana or amphetamines. "Additionally, some of the reported incidents may not be directly related to e-cigarette use - the seizures may have been triggered by an underlying medical condition, use of other substances, or other factors", Gottlieb and Abernethy noted.

In a statement, the FDA stressed that it does not know yet if there is a direct relationship between vaping and seizures.

One tobacco expert said the link is worth investigating. It's too early at this time to say whether e-liquid nicotine devices can be named as the cause of these seizures.

For the past two years, the FDA has been trying to stem huge spikes in vaping among teens. The agency has also expanded its investigation into e-cigarette companies in an effort to uncover whether they are marketing products illegally and outside the agency's compliance policy.
