Poor diet is biggest health risk and more deadly than smoking

The world on average consumes more than ten times the recommended amount of sugar-sweetened beverages and 86 per cent more sodium per person than is considered safe Poor diet causes one in seven deaths in Britain, Lancet finds

"The really big story for people to act on is increase your whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetable intake and reduce salt if you can".

"UK guidelines advise that we should be eating plenty of fruit and vegetables as well as beans, lentils, fish and wholegrains".

Strikingly, the researchers found more deaths were associated with not eating enough healthy foods rather than with eating too many unhealthy foods. In Bangladesh, low intake of fruits - below 250 grammes per day - was the leading dietary risk.

The Global Burden of Disease study tracked trends from 1990 to 2017 of consumption of 15 dietary factors.

The causes of these deaths were cardiovascular disease (10 million deaths), cancer (913,000 deaths) and type 2 diabetes (almost 339,000 deaths).

"Diet quality matters no matter what weight you are", Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, told the BBC about the report.

AUBREY: It's kind of a stunning thought, given the risks of smoking or drug use, this idea that poor diet may top them all. Most of those, around 10 million, were from cardiovascular disease, researchers found.

Not eating enough fruit was linked to a further two million deaths, too.

The countries with the lowest rates of diet-related deaths included Israel, France, Spain, Japan, and Andorra.

According to the Lancet article, diet is now a bigger killer worldwide than smoking, and salt is the single biggest factor in diet-related deaths.

For context, Israel had 89 diet-related deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 892 in Uzbekistan. The UK ranked 23rd (127 deaths per 100,000), and the United States ranked 43rd (171 deaths per 100,000) after Rwanda and Nigeria (41st and 42nd).

"Generally, the countries that have a diet close to the Mediterranean diet, which has higher intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts and healthy oils [including olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids from fish] are the countries where we see the lowest number of [diet-related] deaths", Afshin says.

Experts blame a drop in the global consumption of foods such as nuts, seeds, milk and whole grains and increases in processed meat, salt and soda.

The report noted that in some poorer countries, the elements of a healthy diet are too expensive for many people to access, and urged policy changes to improve that access. University of Washington epidemiologist Dr. Ashkan Afshin explains to the New York Times that while cutting back on salt should be a priority, the gulf between what we should be doing and are doing is greatest with healthy foods, giving this example: Globally, we eat an average of 27 grams of red meat a day, just a bit higher than the recommended 23 grams.
