Poor diet causes hundreds of deaths in India

One in five deaths worldwide are linked to bad diet, study finds The country where most people die because of an unhealthy diet

The diets most closely linked to death were those high in sodium, and low in whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds and omega-3 fatty acids, the study found. Diets high in sugar, salt and bad fats are known risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many types of cancer.

A report in the BBC on the study noted the finding that some 10 million of the 11 million deaths each year attributed to diet were from cardiovascular diseases, or diseases caused by the narrowing or blocking of blood vessels, often in or near the heart or brain. However, we have to aim to eat them in moderation as it has been revealed that eating a bad diet is actually worse than smoking and causes more deaths each year. "Death from a poor diet is more than it is from blood pressure and tobacco usage".

Which countries do best when it comes to diet?

Low intake of whole grains - below 125 grams per day - was the leading dietary risk factor for death and disease in India, the US, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Russia, Egypt, Germany, Iran, and Turkey. Israel, France, Spain and Japan were some of the top countries which had the least poor diet-related deaths.

'We find that diet is one of the dominant drivers of health around the world, it's really quite profound, ' Professor Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, told the BBC.

The UK had 127 diet-related deaths per 100,000 people per year, and the U.S. had 170.

The Mediterranean pattern of eating is among the healthiest in the world. As the Trump administration and USA lawmakers debate whether able-bodied people who don't work should be entitled to public food assistance, it's clear that many people around the globe struggle to afford healthy foods.

She said the UK's challenge to the food industry to reduce sugar from everyday foods was "a clear step in the right direction", adding "we want to see that ambition from other countries". A recent study published in the journal PLOS One by researchers at the University of Guelph found that there would not be enough fruit and vegetables to go around.

Research carried out by Dr Christopher Murray, Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington in the USA has found that Israel has the world's healthiest diet, or to be more precise, the world's least unhealthy diet.

The findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated global efforts to improve diet through collaboration with various sections of the food system and policies that drive balanced diets.
