A mother who's daughter died in a collision involving a lorry driver using his phone has welcomed the move, continuing her plea to urge drivers to stop using their mobiles behind the wheel.

'While it will no doubt be argued that the technology cannot yet definitively detect drivers that are using handheld phones illegally, we are aware of camera equipment being trialled in other countries which can'.

A sign will flash at the driver telling them to stop using their mobile - but the detectors can not tell if it is a driver or passenger using the phone.

Police have revealed a new detection system that can see when motorists are using mobile phones while behind the wheel.

The campaign is being supported by Kate Goldsmith, who lost her daughter Aimee after a lorry driver crashed into the auto she was a passenger in while he was using his mobile phone to change music while driving.

Detector units are being installed in accident hotspots, to deter motorists from using their mobiles.

"We are pleased to be working with the Joint Operations Unit for Thames Valley and Hampshire Police to reduce the devastating impact of people driving whilst using a mobile phone".

"We will be utilising the new technology from Westcotec to help inform our enforcement activity to find hotspots and also further educate motorists".

Police have unveiled an all-new device which is able to detect when a driver is using their mobile phone while behind the wheel of their auto.

TVP announced the use of the technology today.

This new campaign, which was trialled in Norfolk last year, has been supported by bereaved families, such as Kate Goldsmith, who last her 11-year-old daughter, Aimee, due to a lorry driver crashing into the auto she was passenger in while changing music on his phone.

What they haven't figured out is, how do you know if it's a driver or passenger on the phone?

The new device will be first used on the A34 in Oxfordshire before being used across the rest of the Thames Valley and Hampshire police force areas.

You can get 6 penalty points and a £200 fine if you use a hand-held phone when driving.

Thames Valley Police and Hampshire Constabulary have developed the technology with Westcotec Ltd. "Remember it's not worth the risk".

A spokesperson for the forces said: "The technology can detect when Bluetooth is being used but cannot detect if a passenger is using the phone, but the sign will still be activated reminding motorists of the distraction of a mobile phone whilst driving".

Norfolk-based Westcotec's managing director Chris Spinks said: "Our system is created to provide intelligence to police officers so that they can carry out enforcement activity in order to reduce the amount of people who are using mobile phones illegally on our roads".
