Tributes poured in from various political leaders.

The massacre took place at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar during the Baisakhi festival on April 13, 1919 when troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer opened fire at a crowd of people holding a pro-independence demonstration, leaving several dead and scores injured.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is considered a symbol of colonial cruelty and the Indian public and governments has been demanding an apology for it from the United Kingdom for decades, including on the occasion of the visit of Queen Elizabeth to Amritsar in 1997.

"Those who lost their lives in the massacre deserve a "full, clear and unequivocal apology for what took place".

"We deeply regret what happened and the suffering caused", he wrote, echoing comments by the prime minister Theresa May in parliament on Wednesday when she too stopped short of apologising.

"Today, when we observe 100 years of the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre, India pays tributes to all those martyred".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi were among the leaders who paid tribute to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on its 100 anniversary on Saturday. Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited the memorial and wrote in the visitors' book: "The cost of freedom must never ever be forgotten".

The fund, according to author Kim Wagner, saw people from all over the British empire and from all walks of life contributing to support Dyer, including "Rudyard Kipling, who gave 10 pounds". Parliamentary Affairs Minister Brahma Mohindra brought this proposal which was a voice note under the leadership of Amarinder Singh.

India can never forget that awful massacre that stigmatized civilization. "The nation remains indebted to them", he tweeted. Saturday marks the centenary of the tragedy.

Indian newspapers this week repeated their calls for an apology for a massacre that Winston Churchill, then secretary of state for war, called "monstrous".

Morning Post, a conservative British newspaper, raised a hefty sum of "26,000 pounds" for the benefit of General Reginald Dyer - the man behind the awful Jallianwala Bagh massacre, according to a recently-released book. I want to thank the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Centenary Committee and the Shaheed Udham Singh Welfare Trust (Birmingham) for initiating and leading the debate in the United Kingdom.
