Authorities described the child's injuries as life-threatening and said witnesses gave the child first aid.
The family is now with the child, police said. A witness said the boy's mother sobbed and screamed, "Somebody hurt my baby!"
Witnesses told police the child had been either thrown or pushed and that the suspect had taken off running. Tina Hailey told the publication she was rounding the corner when she heard a woman screaming, "Oh my god, pray for my son". "It was horrific", she said.
Cops were called to the mall, in Bloomington, around 10:15 a.m. Friday after the child landed on first floor, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said at a news conference. "Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with that child and his family in hopes that that child is able to recover".
Police in Minnesota say they're investigating an incident at the Mall of America in which a child was reportedly thrown from a third-floor balcony.
In a statement Friday afternoon, the mall's management acknowledged the incident.

According to Minnesota court records, Aranda has been convicted of interfering with a police officer, trespassing and fifth-degree assault - all misdemeanors - and felony first-degree damage to property.
