"We will continue to closely monitor the remaining debris from India's ASAT test to ensure the safety of assets on-orbit and human spaceflight activities such as the International Space Station", said Garrett Marquis, a National Security Council spokesman.

On April 2, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said about 60 pieces of debris have been tracked so far and out of which 24 are going above the apogee of the ISS, the point of the space station's orbit farthest from the Earth.

The US military tracks objects in space to predict the collision risk for the ISS and satellites.

Shanahan said he believed that India had avoided a similar scenario by testing at a lower altitude.

The United States has said that the issue of space debris is an important concern and it has taken note of the Indian government's statements that its recently conducted anti-satellite test (A-SAT) was created to address "space debris issues", according to US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino. India is now the fourth country to have tested ASATs, the others being the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China. However, others have expressed concern over this sort of test which has not taken place since China destroyed a satellite in 2007.

"As per our simulations, there were no possibilities of hitting the International Space Station with debris from the satellite", he added.

India had earlier used a ballistic missile interceptor, designed indigenously to destroy one of the country's own satellites at a height of 300 km (186 miles).

"There was a risk for 10 days and we have crossed that period", he told a press conference.

"Destroying satellites orbiting in altitude bands that are heavily used for both military and civil satellites also can have ripple effects, producing unsafe clouds of debris that could stay in orbit for decades or centuries, disabling or destroying any satellites they collide with", said Grego in a statement.

In all, the test indicates that space is increasingly becoming a security realm, despite the best efforts of the Outer Space Treaty which envisions parties exploring space for peaceful purposes.

Outer space is also emerging as the fourth arena of warfare.
