Health officials: Confirmed measles cases at 34 in MI

Number of 2019 measles cases surpasses total for 2018 More measles cases in the US in first 3 months of 2019 than all of 2018: CDC

There have been 387 cases through March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday.

Before the measles vaccination program started in 1963, an estimated 3 million to 4 million people contracted measles each year in the U.S. About 400 to 500 of those died, 48,000 were hospitalized and 1,000 developed the brain inflammation encephalitis, the CDC said.

Global travel to areas where there are large outbreaks of the disease, like Israel and Ukraine, has been blamed for the recent rise. "The biggest are two outbreaks in New York", Dr. Manisha Patel of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which tracks reported cases, told Newsweek.

Outbreaks have been noted in Rockland County, New York; New York City; Washington state; Santa Cruz County, California; New Jersey; and Butte County, California.

The high number of measles cases so far this year is due to outbreaks in a handful of states, including California, New York, and Washington, CBS News reported. All three area outbreaks were linked to travelers bringing measles back from Israel and then spreading the virus among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

"As of July 18, 2018, all 50 states and [Washington] DC require vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; polio; measles and rubella (49 states and DC also require mumps vaccination); and the varicella (chickenpox) vaccination", according to ProCon.org.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), last year's total of 372 measles cases occurred predominantly as a result of unvaccinated travelers entering the USA from places like the Philippines, Ukraine, and Israel, all of which experienced outbreaks. "Also, measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed".

New York: There are now two outbreaks in New York state and a total of 420 cases since October 2018, so these reports are not confined to 2019.

BREAKING: Rockland County is declaring of state of emergency Tuesday over the ongoing measles outbreak and barring unvaccinated minors from public places.

Dr Jenny Mack of the PHA said measles was one of the most infectious viral diseases known.

In 2014, the year that now holds first place, a shocking 667 measles cases were reported.

The measles vaccine is 97 percent effective, according to the CDC. Prior to the vaccine, measles caused approximately 450 to 500 deaths each year in the United States. "Many states require more vaccines as the children age, for example West Virginia requires the meningitis vaccine at the CDC-recommended age (11-12 years old)", according to the website.
