This would make the Android phones that people carry every day a very convenient physical key to own, without having to carry something extra. The feature uses the FIDO Alliance protocols, which have become an industry standard for hardware security keys. To help, Google is letting you use your phone as a 2SV security key when you attempt to sign-in.

The company announced in a blog post that you Android smartphone can now be used as 2FA key when logging into another device, with users authenticating the login attempt by simply holding down the volume button on their smartphone.

This feature is now in beta, and in addition to requiring an Android phone, you'll also need a Bluetooth-enabled Chrome OS, macOS X, or Windows 10 machine running Google Chrome.

Make sure you're enrolled in 2SV.

From the 2-Step Verification page, you'll need to scroll down and select Add Security Key. At the same time, traditional passwords are gearing up to go the way of the dodo, making space for more sophisticated methods of authentication, and now two-step verification is taken to the next level of convenience with a simple new feature.

This new option to Google's 2-step verification (2SV) is similar to the Titan security key that was introduced in the middle of a year ago.

The feature works for those with Google Cloud Accounts as well. Once that's done, trying to sign into your account using the Chrome browser on a computer with its Bluetooth support activated will send a notification to your handset (which also needs its Bluetooth and location services to be enabled).
