USA measles cases have surged again, and are on pace to set a record for most illnesses in 25 years. The cases were found in 20 states spanning the country.

It is one of the most contagious viruses around, however, nothing about measles has changed.

Measles killed almost 110,000 people in 2017. The CDC report did not say whether there have been any fatalities.

Measles cases rose 300 percent worldwide through the first three months of 2019 compared to the same period a year ago, the United Nations said Monday, as concern grows over the impact of anti-vaccination stigma.

A growing and vocal fringe of parents in the United States oppose measles vaccines in the belief, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in the vaccines can cause autism or other disorders.

Last week, New York City officials declared a public health emergency and ordered mandatory measles vaccinations to halt the outbreak concentrated among ultra-Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn, putting in place the broadest vaccination order in the United States in almost three decades.

"There is insufficient evidence of a measles epidemic or risky outbreak to justify the respondents' extraordinary measures, including forced vaccination", said the lawsuit, identifying the parents only by their initials. "This follows consecutive increases over the past two years", it said in a statement. "90 percent of people who are unvaccinated, or non-immune, and come in contact with someone with measles will become infected". It is the worst outbreak seen in the city since 1991, the mayor said. If the outbreaks aren't brought under control, public health experts worry that the cases in 2019 will hit a record almost two decades after measles's "elimination" in the United States. There have been 25 hospitalizations and of the six people who have been taken to the intensive care unit, two remained and were in stable condition.

New York City has had 285 cases, virtually all of them in Brooklyn, since the outbreak began in October.

Health officials in Rockland County, New York, tried to bar unvaccinated children from public places, but a judge prohibited the county from enforcing that rule. Officials there banned children not vaccinated against measles from public spaces last month.
