Stratolaunch is created to be a mobile platform for launching satellites into space.
The world's largest airplane - a Stratolaunch behemoth with two fuselages and six Boeing 747 engines - made its first test flight on Saturday in California.
Washington D.C, April 14: The world's largest airplane took off for the first time on Saturday morning.
Here's how Stratolaunch is supposed to work once the plane is fully tested and certified: The jet, carrying a rocket loaded with a satellite, will take off from Mojave and climb to an altitude of 35,000 feet.
Stratolaunch took off just before 7 AM PDT from the Mojave Air Space Port (MASP), achieved a maximum speed of 189 miles per hour at an altitude of 17,000 feet.
Built by Stratolaunch, the company set up by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2011, the aircraft is created to act as a flying launch pad for satellites.
Evan Thomas, the Scaled Composites test pilot who flew the plane, said the flight went very well.
"What a fantastic first flight", Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said.
The test flight came after a series of taxi tests of the plane at increasing speeds, culminating with one January 10 where the plane's nose gear briefly left the ground.
But Allen died in October of previous year so the future of the company is uncertain.
If all goes as planned, Stratolaunch said the plane is expected to launch its first satellite sometime next year.
The aircraft is created to carry as many as three satellite-laden rockets at a time under the center of its enormous wing, which stretches 385 feet (117 meters) - a longer wingspan than any other aircraft.
Powered by the same type of engines used by Boeing 747s, the aircraft is created to take off at a maximum weight of 1.3m pounds.
It features twin fuselages - sort of the aeroplane equivalent of a catamaran - that span 72.5 meters long.
The widest plane ever built prior to the Stratolaunch was the mid-20th-century H-4 Hercules - aka "Spruce Goose" - built by famous U.S. aviator Howard Hughes.
The dual-fuselage Stratolaunch, which has six Boeing 747 engines, is created to launch rockets into orbit from an altitude of 35,000 feet.
Its wings stretch about 97.5-meters and can still be seen today at an aviation museum in Oregon.
