The study analyzed information from more than 27,000 adults in the USA ages 20 and up who took part in a national health survey between 1999 and 2010.
The new study, however, says there's not much evidence that supplements of any sort can prolong your life, despite their widespread use.
Over the course of the study, which lasted for a period of six years, 3,613 people in the study died, 945 from cardiovascular illness and 805 from cancer.
But excess calcium from food was not associated with a similar uptick in mortality risk, Zhang says, which suggests that the body may not be able to clear excess supplemental calcium as well as it can natural calcium.
A new study demonstrates the ineffectiveness of dietary supplements in reducing the risk of death.
However, no link was found between increased consumption of foods containing calcium and the disease.
Unnecessary consumption of vitamin D supplements by individuals who were not deficient in the vitamin might increase the risk of death from any cause, the researchers found.
The study also highlighted the negative effects of overuse of supplements: For example, getting 1000mg per day of calcium in pill form was linked to a 62 percent increased risk of cancer. For each nutrient, the daily supplement dose was calculated by combining the frequency with the product information for ingredient, amount of ingredient per serving, and ingredient unit.
Nutrient intake from foods was also assessed using 24-hour diet recalls conducted by trained interviewers. Intake of vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc and copper at recommended levels was associated with a reduction in all-cause or cardiovascular mortality, but only when those nutrients were obtained from food. However, excess calcium was linked to an increase risk of cancer mortality.
"Based on the totality of evidence, it's becoming more and more clear that the regular use of dietary supplements is not beneficial in reducing the risk of mortality among the general population in the USA", said study coauthor Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, an associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.
The association between a lower risk of death and nutrients consumed in foods remained significant even after those factors were accounted for.
Instead, the team found indications that use of vitamin D supplements by individuals with no sign of vitamin D deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of death from all causes including cancer. While certain nutrients may contribute to a longer life, they need to come from a food source, the study found.
The authors note some limitations, including the duration of dietary supplement use studied.
