Elon Musk Calls Jeff Bezos Copycat Over Amazon's Internet Satellite Plan

Bezos: Amazon Will Take Risks, Learn From Failures Amazon's Jeff Bezos throws down the gauntlet to rival retailers to boost wages

Responding to a news report on Amazon's satellite launch on Twitter, Mr Musk tagged Jeff Bezos calling him a copycat using a cat emoticon for portion of his tweet.

Amazon challenged its retail rivals to raise their wages and improve benefits, saying the competition will help everyone.

"Today I challenge our top retail competitors (you know who you are!) to match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage", Bezos said. In an annual letter to his shareholders on Thursday, Bezos compared the growth in merchandise sales of third-party sellers on Amazon since 1999 with the growth of third-party sales on eBay in the same period. "Third-party sellers are kicking our first-party butt", Bezos wrote, attributing their success to tools built by Amazon, including the Prime subscription program and Fulfillment by Amazon distribution service.

The Walmart executive also said the "vast majority" of warehouse workers earn $15 an hour as well as bonuses, a criticism of Amazon's decision to take away bonuses after boosting its pay to $15 an hour.

"Hey retail competitors out there (you know who you are) how about paying your taxes?"

Contesting the perception that Amazon was avoiding federal taxes, a spokesperson of Amazon said the assumption was unfounded and highlighted its contribution to creating a quarter million jobs in the U.S.

Bezos said the company has raised its minimum wage to $15-an-hour which has benefited more than 250,000 Amazon employees, as well as over 100,000 seasonal employees.

Noting that Amazon pays all taxes required to pay in the US and every country it operates, the spokesperson said it paid $2.6 billion in corporate tax and had $3.4 billion in tax expense in the last three years.

Walmart has enacted a number of wage hikes in the past few years.
