DOGS can sniff out early signs of cancer in humans with almost 97 per cent accuracy, a study has shown.
Findingspresented to USA scientists yesterday showed how three beagles were trained to sniff out malignant lung cancer in samples from patients.
A new study has revealed that dogs can smell cancer in blood samples with 97% accuracy.
The firm now believes believe canine scent detection can be used to develop a non-invasive way of screening for cancer.
In the study, the team used a special form of clicker trainer to teach four beagles to distinguish between normal blood samples and blood samples from people with lung cancer.
The new study builds upon previous research, including a 2017 study that found a trained golden retriever and pitbull mix could identify the presence of lung cancer through breath samples with an extremely high accuracy rate.
Scientist and study leader Heather Junqueira trained three beagle pups to detect lung cancer in blood samples.
The finding raises hopes that dogs could soon be used to detect cancer in people at a much earlier stage than other methods of screening, increasing the chance of tackling the disease effectively.
One of the beagles - named Snuggles - lacked the motivation to take part, according to the researchers.
"Although there is now no cure for cancer, early detection offers the best hope of survival", said lead researcher Heather Junqueira in a statement.
Dogs have smell receptors that are 10,000 times more accurate than humans, making them highly sensitive to odours that humans could never perceive.
The researchers now plan to carry out a follow-up study to understand exactly which chemical components the dogs are smelling to detect cancer.
The research was conducted by a group of researchers from BioScentDx, a U.S. based health care services company, and the findings were presented at the annual meeting of the U.S. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Community held in Orlando, Florida.
Parkinson's Disease: Researchers have produced strong evidence that dogs can detect Parkinson's disease, possibly many years before symptoms start to show. They correctly identified the normal samples 97.5 per cent of the time.
