Maryland health officials said Friday that the state has confirmed a case of measles, a highly contagious viral infection that has been spreading in several other states in numbers not seen in decades. Known exposure sites in Oakland County are listed at Oakgov.com/health.

April 1 Yeshivas Darchei Torah School, 21550 West 12 Mile Road, Southfield, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. A single dose of measles vaccine protects about 95 percent of children, but after two doses, nearly 100 percent are immune.

Students who are unimmunized or under-immunized with respect to MMR or MMRV vaccine based on public health immunization records will receive an immunization consent package.

The number of measles cases continues to climb in metro Detroit as 12 new cases have been confirmed in the last week.

A second vaccine dose is given before the start of kindergarten, between ages 4 and 6 years.

For worldwide travel, infants as young as 6 months should be vaccinated against measles.

Schoolchildren in Ontario are supposed to be vaccinated from a wide variety of infectious diseases by the time they are six years old, however the data from Toronto Public Health suggests that only 76.3 per cent of seven year olds during the 2017-2018 school year had been fully vaccinated for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). He declined to say which country the woman had travelled to but said measles outbreaks are occurring in several parts of the world and it's important to have two doses of the measles vaccine.

For more information about measles, visit https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2170/ and http://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html . The illness causes a rash and high fever. The virus, which is spread by air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, can remain in the air for up to two hours after the infected individual leaves. Someone is contagious for days before the rash appears until four days after it begins.

If symptoms develop, residents are urged to call their doctor or emergency room before arriving so they can take precautions to prevent exposure to other individuals.
