Burger King has issued an apology for the ad.

Burger King New Zealand has apologised for and removed a short Instagram video created to promote its Vietnamese Sweet Chilli Tendercrisp burger, as Burger King apology continues to go viral on Weibo in China. Some Weibo users felt that the ad mocked Asians as no one would use chopsticks to eat a burger.

People quickly started tagging the Burger King creative team and demanding they address the racially insensitive ad.

"We have removed and it certainly does not reflect our brand values around diversity and inclusion", James Woodbridge, Burger King's general manager for marketing told Stuff.

Of course, not everyone was offended by it, and many Twitter users found the whole ordeal confusing.

The video was apparently created by the local franchise to promote its new Vietnamese Sweet Chilli Tendercrisp burger.

The ad, posted on the company's New Zealand Instagram account, sparked a social media backlash and complaints of cultural insensitivity. According to media reports, the company still feels the pain months after the firestorm, as a-list celebrities and social media influencers around the world continue to shun the brand.

In her tweets, Ms Mo wrote of the importance of fighting the different manifestations of racism, from "the kind that makes fun of different cultures, to the kind that shoots and murders those peacefully praying in their place of worship".

She added that the ad was created "as though their thought process went, 'what's Asian?"

Burger King in New Zealand has scrapped an Instagram advertisement following online backlash.

Chinese media outlets compared the video to one issued by Italian luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana past year, which featured a Chinese model struggling to eat pizza and spaghetti with chopsticks. The hashtag, which translates as #NewBurgerKingAdvertAllegedlyRacist, has also been used more than 12,000 times. It is hard to believe that Burger King has now made the same mistake.
