Barr to testify before the Senate as Mueller's report looms

The president's comments came a day after Barr testified at a congressional hearing that he believes "spying did occur" on the campaign, suggesting the origins of the Russian Federation investigation that shadowed Trump's presidency for almost two years may have been mishandled.

Barr did not say what the spying was or how he thought it was carried out, but he appeared to be referring to the surveillance of Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser, that began in 2016 under former President Barack Obama's administration.

"I think spying did occur", Barr said, speaking to senators during a hearing on Wednesday, according to Reuters. And there were a lot of rules put in place to make sure that there was an adequate basis before our law enforcement agencies get involved in political surveillance, ' he added.

He said the Justice Department would release a redacted version of the Mueller report next week.

Barr was loath to provide many details other than to say that the Justice Department planned to release the redacted report in the next week. "I'll go a step further". By focusing on the privacy rights of "peripheral" third parties, Barr may be signalling he will make an exception to the policy in order to allow information to remain unredacted concerning people who, while not charged with crimes, are central to the probe, potentially including Trump.

"It's an unfathomable and irresponsible remark", Senator Richard Blumenthal told Al Jazeera. It was a scam, ' Trump said.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative Jerrold Nadler reacted on Twitter saying Barr's "comments directly contradict what DOJ previously told us. In the meantime, the AG still owes us the full Mueller report".

"I think spying did occur", Barr told Congress, without presenting evidence.

And though the attorney general was reportedly opposed to the idea of reversing course on Obamacare at first, he then expounded on his reasoning for eventually deciding that his department would step back from defending the law, doing so in a way that drew more questions.

As Congress continued to grill U.S. Attorney General William Barr on all things related to the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia Report on Wednesday, the back-and-forth veered into the land of spying and intrigue.

They come at a time when Barr's independence is under scrutiny from congressional Democrats as he prepares a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russian Federation investigation. "Perpetuating conspiracy theories is beneath the office of the Attorney General". And, Barr said, he and the Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein met with the special counsel team on March 5, where they were briefed on the basic conclusions of the report.

"I'm a lawyer, I'm not in charge of health care", Barr insisted to a House Appropriations subcommittee.
