Attorney general says 'I think spying did occur' on Trump's campaign

Watch Live Congress grills Attorney General Barr on the release of the Mueller report GOP Rep. Collins: Move to Impeach or Bring in Mueller

His comments risked inflaming Democratic concerns that Barr's views are overly in sync with Trump's and that he's determined to protect the president as he readies the release of a version of Mueller's report.

"I haven't seen the referrals yet from Congressman Nunes, but obviously if there is a predicate for an investigation it will be conducted", Barr said.

Justice Department attorney Courtney Enlow said the two sides should engage after the anticipated release of the Mueller report in mid-April, arguing that they would "better understand the world we're living in".

This issue is likely to get more attention Wednesday when Barr appears for his second day of testimony before Congress this week, this time before a Republican-led panel in the Senate.

The host of the Fox News program, Maria Bartiromo, told Nunes that he "ought to be taking a victory lap here" after Barr's memo said there was no evidence of Russian collusion.

Barr was loath to provide many details other than to say that the Justice Department planned to release the redacted report in the next week.

Lowey asked Barr a very simple question: Who is right - the President, who says he was totally exonerated on the question of collusion and obstruction or Mueller, who Barr directly quoted in his summary letter, saying "while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him?" Democrats have expressed concern that his version will hide wrongdoing by the president and are frustrated by the four-page summary letter he released last month that they say paints Mueller's findings in an overly favorable way for the president.

In the House, Barr was squaring off with Democrats who have subpoena power and have already authorized a subpoena in the Judiciary Committee to obtain the full Mueller report and underlying evidence.

Fox News is also told that the Justice Department's Inspector General (IG) is separately looking into whether former FBI Director James Comey mishandled classified information by including a variety of sensitive matters in his private memos, including the name and code name of a confidential human source.

In particular, Barr has expressed an interest in the initial Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants that allowed surveillance of Trump's campaign to take place.

Mueller concluded that neither Trump nor anyone in his campaign colluded with Russian Federation. Now, the objective is to create a cloud of suspicion around Barr which, I guess, will cast doubt on the Mueller report.

Walton's ruling came as U.S. Attorney General William Barr, testifying in Congress on Tuesday, said he would deliver a redacted copy of Mueller's report to lawmakers "within a week". Barr didn't answer, insisting he has said everything he planned to say about the report until it comes out.
