On Alexander Ovechkin's extensive National Hockey League resume, you wouldn't expect to find knockout fighter.

Before Caps' captain Alex Ovechkin dropped dropped the mitts prior to Monday's tilt with Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov, where the Capitals captain knocked out the Hurricanes rookie, it had been nine years since he'd been penalized for a fight.

The two had been pushing and shoving before dropping the gloves during Game 3 of the first-round matchup, which the defending champ Washington led 2-0 as the series shifted to Carolina.

There's debate over whether or not Ovi pushed Svechnikov down onto the ice, but the slow motion replay looks like he may have just lost his balance. The Carolina forward fell to the ice and hit his head, prompting teammates to help him to the locker room. Ovechkin has never fought in the playoffs.

It was Ovechkin's fourth career fight and first since 2010, according to HockeyFights.com.

The Hurricanes later announced that Svechnikov wouldn't return to the game due to an upper-body injury. The Capitals lead the best-of-seven first round series 2-1.

Svechnikov had an assist in his post-season debut on Thursday and followed that up with a two-goal performance in Saturday's loss in Washington.

It's not the first time the teenager has meet the Russian superstar.
