Western Alberta unemployment rate increases to 5.1 per cent

"We always take this survey with a grain of salt, and it could still be in the final stretch of catching up to the larger gains we saw previous year in the more reliable payroll survey", said Royce Mendes, senior economist at CIBC, in a research note.

Employers in Ottawa-Gatineau added 7,300 jobs to their payrolls in February, pushing the region's unemployment rate down one percentage point to 5.1 per cent, Statistics Canada said Friday.

However, Alberta's oil and gas sector wasn't actually a contributing factor in the increased unemployment rate, as that industry saw an increase in 2,600 jobs over the past month.

On the other end of the spectrum, the number of jobs in accommodations and food services shrunk by 14,000.

Statistics Canada also reported that participation by women in the workforce was up.

The Canadian increase even outpaced job creation in the United States, where figures showed an increase of just 20,000 new positions last month.

Alberta's employment level was mostly unchanged from January and last February, but the agency says the number of people looking for work has increased, pushing the provincial unemployment rate up to 7.3 percent.

Bank of Canada deputy governor Lynn Patterson said Thursday that she expected economic growth to build fresh momentum in the second half of the year, thanks in large part to the still-strong employment conditions and improving wages.

The Bank of Canada keeps close watch of several wage indicators ahead of policy decisions on its key interest rate. The number of public-service workers in the region fell from 164,300 in January to 162,600 last month.

Wages accelerated to 2.2 percent for permanent employees.

The jobs mix was generally good, with full-time employment firmly in the driver's seat (+67.4k).

Much of the employment gain shown in February was due to Ontario seeing 37,000 additional jobs - weighed slightly against their western neighbour, Manitoba, which saw a decrease of 3,300.

That's a small increase in the jobless rate from the month before, when it was 8.3 per cent, but down from February a year ago, when it was 8.9 per cent.
