Trump presented with Shamrock Bowl Irish Taoiseach

Theresa May in international newspapers Abroad the credibility of both Britain and the Brexit project is evaporating with every shambolic day that passes

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he was "surprised at how badly" Brexit has gone and that UK Prime Minister Theresa May ignored his advice on how to better handle negotiations.

Trump made the remark during a news conference in the Oval Office with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar during the prime minister's annual trip to the White House and Capitol Hill.

Before Mr Varadkar's arrival, Mr Trump tweeted that he looked forward to making a trade deal with the United Kingdom, several hours before British MPs in the House of Commons were due to vote on whether they should seek an extension for Brexit from the EU.

Trump added: "I'm surprised at how badly it's all gone from the standpoint of a negotiation".

He added: "I hate to see everything being ripped apart right now", and said he didn't think a second referendum would be possible.

But despite criticising Mrs May's approach at the negotiating table, Mr Trump reiterated his desire for a strong UK-US trade deal. And also we want to make sure we still have frictionless trade between Britain and Ireland because I believe in free trade.

Trump, who holds himself up as a master deal-maker, said he had given Prime Minister Theresa May his ideas on how she could negotiate a successful deal for leaving the 28-member group of nations. "I regret Brexit's happening".

"Varadkar took Pence up on his offer on Thursday, bringing Barrett along for a morning reception at the vice president's residence on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory". "The potential is unlimited!"

Parliament will vote later Thursday on whether to extend the March 29 deadline for a deal.

The Irish PM said the most pressing issue facing his country was how to settle questions about the future of the border between Ireland, an European Union member, and Northern Ireland, which won't be. "I predicted it was going to happen".

After their private meeting, Mr Varadkar said it had been an opportunity for him to set out Ireland's position on Brexit, "particularly when it comes to the peace process".

This prompted Mr Trump to complain about how the U.S. was treated in trade talks with the European Union and he warned of tariffs being slapped on European Union products.

MPs have rejected May's withdrawal agreement by huge margins twice and will next vote on delaying Brexit on Thursday night. Trump gave it a try, too, and got pretty close, at the final theatrical rite of the Irish visit - the presentation of a crystal bowl of shamrocks. "Everything does. One way or the other, it's going to work out".
