Security agents arrested the lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh, at her home in June a year ago.

Sotoudeh, an internationally acclaimed lawyer, has represented activists who were prosecuted for their protest against mandatory scarf.

Sotoudeh's husband, Reza Khandan, earlier this week said that she will have to serve an extra 10-years in prison - the longest sentence of the seven verdicts - on top of a five-year term she is now serving.

The Commission's Working Group considers communications received by the United Nations of alleged human rights violations affecting the status of women, and uses these to identify "trends and patterns of injustice and discriminatory practices against women for purposes of policy formulation and development of strategies for the promotion of gender equality".

"We praise Sotoudeh's integrity, passion and independence in fighting for justice and human rights, and call for her unjust sentence to be overturned", added the lawyers.

According to India Times, She was charged with multiple national security-related offences. She spent three years in prison and was released in 2013.

A report the same day from a state-funded news outlet, the Iranian Students' News Agency, quoted a hard-line judge, Mohammad Moghiseh, as saying that he had sentenced Ms. Sotoudeh to a total of seven years in prison and mentioning two charges, of taking part in an illegal assembly and collusion against the state.

She has denied all charges against her.

"This verdict shows that making statements in our country comes with such a high price that an attorney can be sentenced to 44 years for it", he told the center.

One of Sotoudeh's lawyers, Mahmud Behzadi-Rad said that the verdict had been handed down in absentia.

"In view of the apparent lack of a fair trial and concerns about the arbitrary nature of the charges, we urge the Iranian authorities to immediately review Ms. Sotoudeh's conviction, release her pending the outcome of the review, and ensure that her human and legal rights are fully guaranteed", the experts said. "Nasrin Sotoudeh has dedicated her life to defending women's rights and speaking out against the death penalty - it is utterly outrageous that Iran's authorities are punishing her for her human rights work", Philip Luther of Amnesty International said.

The condemnation of the lawyer and activist has raised an indignant response from most of the global community, including human rights NGOs and various Western chancelleries.

Sotoudeh had been serving a 5-year sentence after being convicted on June 13, 2018. "Eight months earlier she had been told that the five-year prison sentence issued earlier would be enforced", Khandan said, according to DW.
