Province to ban cellphones in classrooms

Ontario has chose to ban cellphones in classrooms, but Alberta is not ready to make that call.

The Ontario government says cell phones distract from learning, and while the local school board agrees, it doesn't believe banning phones is the right route.

Over the past number of years, school boards across the province have been using more technology to teach, and Fields said his board is no exception.

The formal announcement of the ban is expected in the near future.

"It's really seen as a support when the teacher has provided that approval".

The impending cellphone ban was initially proposed by the Progressive Conservative party as part of their platform during last year's election campaign.

In a statement to CTV News, the Alberta government said "Minister Eggen trusts Alberta's teachers and school boards to make their own rules regarding the use of cell phones in their classrooms".

"The notion that teachers are simply allowing inappropriate cellphone use at the moment is incorrect", he said.

"I think that it's time for the government to take back the power and give it back to the teachers inside the classroom", says Kehoe.

About 97 per cent of respondents favoured some sort of restriction on phones in class, sources told the Canadian Press.

It's not clear exactly how the directive would look, but the government will leave it up to school boards in how they enforce a ban in their schools.

"Students need to be discerning digital citizens and opportunities should be provided within the curriculum to allow students to safely explore various uses and risks of technology in an intentionally guided and supportive environment", the association wrote.

"The Ford government is just duplicating powers that educators already have to control cellphone use in their classrooms".

Spokesman Ryan Bird said the TDSB encourages appropriate uses of technology in classrooms.

In Ontario, enforcing the ban will be up to individual boards and schools.

It states that personal electronic devices, like cellphones, should support classroom activities and that teachers would guide and monitor student access to their use. These improvements were mostly demonstrated among the students who were typically "low achieving".
