Cali, 53, said to be head of the infamous Gambino crime family, may not have seen the blue pickup truck approaching before it mowed him down.

A man said by federal prosecutors to have been a top leader of New York's notorious Gambino crime family was shot and killed Wednesday on Staten Island. The New York Daily News stated that a family member called 911 and said Cali was run over before he was shot; one witness told the Daily News, "There were like six shots, and then there were three more".

Cali was named head of the family in summer 2013, DNA Info reported at the time, taking over total control of the more than 750-person organization.

Rising Gambino family mobster John Gotti allegedly ordered the hit on Castellano.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Cali to Staten Island University North where he was pronounced dead.

NY media say it is the first targeted killing of a mob boss in the city since 1985. They remain powerful players in the black market, however, in loan sharking, gambling, prostitution and the drug trade, according to law enforcement.

In 2015, Cali, who was known as "Franky Boy", became the acting boss of the Gambino family-one of New York City's "Five Families"-replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu".

The last Mafia boss to be shot to death in New York City was Gambino don Paul Castellano, assassinated outside a Manhattan steakhouse in 1985 at the direction of Gotti, who then took over.

During his trial, it was also revealed that Gotti had been the one to organize the ruthless assassination of Castellano outside Sparks Steak House in 1985. The cases resulted in long prison terms for their bosses - Cali's swaggering 1980s-era predecessor John Gotti included - and encouraged their successors to keep a lower profile. He was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison and was released in 2009.

Staten Island's affluent Todt Hill neighbourhood is renowned for its crime connections.

Since Gotti's downfall, the Gambinos - and other mafia families - have lost much of the power they once had over politicians, judges and labor unions.
