Mueller navigates dangerous currents in probing Trump-Russia nexus

Adam Schiff says there is 'no shortage of evidence' to indict Trump AFTER he leaves office Rep. Adam Schiff: ‘It’s a mistake’ for Mueller not to subpoena Trump

The chairman of the House intelligence committee pointed to the case of Michael Cohen, the president's former personal lawyer, in which the government described how "Individual 1" directed and coordinated a campaign fraud scheme.

Current Justice Department orthodoxy is that a sitting president can not be indicted, but Schiff believes this needs to be reevaluated. But Schiff believes that the department should reconsider this position, or indict Trump if he loses re-election in 2020. "There may be grounds for removal of office or there may be grounds for indictment after he leaves office that the Congress discovers".

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from MI, said this week that she planned to move forward with introducing a House resolution to "begin investigating the impeachable offenses" of the president, despite Pelosi's position. "The public gets to see this report".

'In its absence an impeachment becomes a partisan exercise doomed to failure, ' Schiff said.

Schiff, D-Calif., told NBC News' Meet the Press that he believes a face-to-face interview with Trump would be the most effective method to get information regarding any potential collusion with Russian Federation by Trump or his campaign during the election or possible obstruction of justice into the probe.

Schiff said he believes there is both "direct and circumstantial evidence" of collusion between the President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, and "whether that evidence amounts to beyond a reasonable doubt of criminal conspiracy, we have to wait for Bob Mueller on that".

When quizzed by MSNBC's Kaise Hunt on whether or not a lack of "compelling information" in the Mueller report would end the "conversation about Russia", Schiff said it would not.

"That could take a number of forms, from phone records, to social media records, to other documentary evidence".

"If there's insufficient evidence in the Mueller report and we're not able to produce sufficient evidence in our own investigation, that ends the inquiry", Schiff stated. Trump's comment came as CNN reported that the Justice Department may announce as early as next week that Mueller has given Barr his report on the probe. "A lot will be impacted.by the degree to which the Justice Department makes us investigate everything Bob Mueller did all over again. that will have the most direct impact on the length of our investigation".
