The Muslim community in Chicago is taking measures to ensure safety here, after 49 people were killed in coordinated terrorist attacks at two mosques in New Zealand.

"One person a male in his late 20s has been charged with murder and should appear in the Christchurch Court tomorrow morning".

Some countries have stepped up patrols around mosques following the rampage.

And West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock, who is also health secretary, Tweeted: "Desperately shocked at the bad terrorist attack on New Zealand mosques". At least seven were killed at the Linwood Masjid Mosque and at least three people died outside. "We must all stand together as humans to defeat this evil in all its forms". "God bless all!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

She added: "It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack".

The 1 NEWS broadcaster added that one man arrested by the police had been apprehended outside one of the local high schools. "I am calling on the world, in particular the West, to take quick measures", he said. It's still being rebuilt in many places of the city.

"It's obviously very sad".

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told Reuters the Indonesian Muslim community strongly condemned the shootings and that authorities were checking whether any of its citizens were victims.

Eyewitnesses who still stood in shock outside the two Christchurch mosques, where they were apparently attacked by nationalist extremists, described the "unbelievable" scene. One of the gunmen live-streamed the shooting via social media.

"I would never have expected anything like this to happen in Christchurch, I'd never expect this to happen in New Zealand", Dalziel said, as quoted by the Stuff news outlet.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkey's foreign minister, also said the attack was a deliberate demonising of Muslim political struggles. "Calderdale Council's thoughts with all those affected".

"It unites us against extremism, hatred and terrorism, which knows no religion", he said.

Mark Nichols told the New Zealand Herald that he heard about five gunshots and that a prayer-goer returned fire with a rifle or shotgun.

The head of British counter terror police said that United Kingdom officers will "stand together" with Muslim communities in Christchurch, ensuring that security is heightened across the country.

"There is no ongoing or specific threat to any mosque or place of worship", police said.

More than 20 were seriously wounded in what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called a "terrorist attack".

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also shared a video on Twitter, recording a message that ended: "When the flames of hatred are fanned, when people are demonised due to their faith, when we play on people's fears rather than addressing them, the consequences are deadly, as we have seen so sadly today".

He said he chose New Zealand because of its location, to show that even the most remote parts of the world were not free of "mass immigration".

The secretary-general of the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Youssef al-Othaimeen, said in a statement that the attack "served as a further warning on the obvious dangers of hate, intolerance, and Islamophobia".

"I hope that those involved will be severely punished", he said in a message to Arden.

Mass shootings in New Zealand are rare. "So, across the churches of Christchurch and Canterbury, we are praying for our Muslim brothers and sisters; for those injured and those who have lost loved ones; for the police, ambulance and other emergency services; and for all in the city of Christchurch who are feeling distress and fear due to this event". We stand with our Kiwi friends and neighbors and our prayers are with you.
