Labour will vote to block no deal tonight

The prime minister did not discuss resigning after her latest defeat because a government led by her had recently won a confidence vote in the commons, the PM's spokesman said.

Ms Flint, who voted against the Prime Minister's initial deal in January, gave the deal her backing but it was voted down by 391 to 242 - a smaller defeat than when they rejected it two months aho but still humiliating as the clock ticks down towards the March 29 deadline for the United Kingdom to leave the EU.

May, who said that she "profoundly rejects" the decision taken by the house, added that Tory MPs will be given a free vote on the no-deal motion on Wednesday.

"Today, MPs will decide if the United Kingdom should leave the European Union without a deal".

Conservative MP for Faversham and Mid Kent Helen Whateley told ITV Meridian's Political Correspondent Phil Hornby she was hoping for a better result.

The deal was defeated in the Commons on Tuesday evening by 149 votes.

Battling against her ailment the Prime Minister made a statement after the result of the vote was read out, saying: "I continue to believe that by far the best outcome is the United Kingdom leaves the European Union in orderly fashion with a deal".

"I have said this would be necessary since November". But Tory MP Charlie Walker, a May loyalist, had warned before last night's vote that one would ensue "as sure as night follows day" if she lost again.

Jess Phillips, making her first Commons speech in the debates on the Brexit process, said the "single thing that has been missing from the very beginning of this horrid and torrid affair in British politics was any semblance of leadership and courage to take the country somewhere with them".

Some of her colleagues around the Cabinet table think it shows she has to tack to a closer deal with the EU.

Mrs May agreed but insisted her deal is a "good deal" and she wants the United Kingdom to leave with a good deal.

She said: "Obviously we continue to be working to leave in an orderly fashion with a deal, but we have made funding available".

Labour MPs have been calling for clarification on what will happen on March 29 - the day the United Kingdom is scheduled to officially leave the EU.

Following that ruling, the Brexiteer ERG group of Tory MPs as well as the DUP said it could not recommend backing the deal.
