Hate the Galaxy S10 Punch Hole? Here's Samsung's Plan to Kill It

The Galaxy S10 represents the limits of smartphone design in 2019, but Samsung's plan is to eventually bury all of the sensors and cameras underneath the display, leaving nothing but a perfectly preserved screen.

The Korean tech giant is working on a new handset that will place cameras and sensors beneath the display, making it nearly entirely edge-to-edge, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 series with Infinity-O display in February this year, where the front camera is included in a hole under the display.

"Punching a hole in the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display is a very challenging technology", quoted Yang Byung-duk, VP of Samsung's Mobile Communication.

That said, Samsung's folding phone had been rumored to be in the works for several years prior to release, so it seems all the more plausible that a "full screen" design will take equally, if not more, time to develop. While Samsung is attempting to manufacture a flawless display, other OEMs have been trying to eliminate ports and buttons for a more seamless design.

Ultimately when the technology does arrive in phones, it will likely be accompanied the integration of other technologies such as speakers and fingerprint readers in the screen itself, making the dream of the all-screen phone finally a reality.

Samsung's ultimate goal is create a smartphone with all of sensors embedded beneath the screen.

The South Korean tech giant said its Infinity-O Display, used in Galaxy S10, is a "milestone" for its display technology, although going forward, it will showcase a "full screen" look for upcoming smartphones.
