Facebook's site 'down for maintenance' in widespread outage

Although many users are able to open the two popular social media platforms, it seems to not send or receive messages on either platform, and one can not post new content on them either.

Additionally, The Verge reports that some users are experiencing similar problems with Mark Zuckerberg's original social network.

Many of us spend the day alleviating our boredom by scrolling through our social networks. However, the internet did what it does best - set itself on fire and ran to Twitter to react.

Facebook said through its Twitter account that "we're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

But for now, this could be a good opportunity to reflect on maybe taking a break from social media?

The three apps crashed primarily in major urban areas across the United States and Europe, along with parts of South America.

UPDATE: Facebook said in a Twitter post that the downtime isn't caused by a distributed denial of service attack after some rumors to the contrary.

"We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can", a message told many users as they tried to post content.

Facebook has been suffering from outages across the world since around 12pm ET Wednesday.

The outage is also affecting Messenger. Problems range from pages not loading whatsoever to issues within Facebook Messenger.

WhatsApp, on the other hand, was working fine. That outage was the second time that month.

And don't worry, there's still SnapChat - so you can post selfies of yourself with weird filters; TikTok so you can pretend you're on MTV in the late '80s; oh, let's not forget YouTube where most children watch TV these days.
