Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook apps were down for much of Wednesday, although the photo-sharing social network said it was back up early on Thursday.

According to the website downdetector.com, outages were heaviest in North America and Europe, but some users appeared to be affected in other regions.

Facebook and its network of apps have been suffering connectivity issues for over five hours now.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", a Facebook spokesperson said Wednesday.

But with thousands of users complaining on Twitter under the hashtag #facebookdown, a number of media reports put the number affected in the millions.

It's not just Facebook that seems to be suffering from this problem.

Angry users expressed their frustration on Twitter writing, "There is some serious problem with Instagram".

Some Instagram users can see their feed, but not others, and everyone is having trouble posting anything. However, users across the globe have complained about not being able to access the site.

Facebook representatives took to Twitter to update users on the problems.

The coordinated timing of the outages led to speculation Facebook had been hit by a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS), a common form of cyber attack that disrupts a site's services.

While the outage continued, The New York Times reported that United States prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data with companies without letting them know.

"Facebook for personal use is fine - but what happens when we rely on large companies such as this to provide business services?" she said. It's worldwide, but appears to be hitting the US and Europe particularly hard. We expect this to be resolved shortly.
