"Anything of that nature that misrepresents this country - given that [the suspect] was a non-New Zealand citizen - imperils the future and safety of the New Zealand people and our people overseas and it's totally unfair", complained foreign minister Winston Peters, who said he had made his objections to Erdoğan's behaviour clear to Turkish officials.

The Turkish people will not allow Istanbul to become Constantinople, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, in reference to the city's former Christian name, which was reportedly referenced by the attacker who recently carried out an act of terrorism on two mosques in New Zealand.

Erdogan stressed that the Turkish authorities are well aware of what and when to do.

Erdogan said the suspect had twice visited Turkey, and had warned that Turks have no place in Europe.

According to BBC News, he went on: 'Anything of that nature that misrepresents this country - given that [the suspect] was a non-New Zealand citizen - imperils the future and safety of the New Zealand people and our people overseas and it's totally unfair.

He said: 'The wicked person who martyred 49 brothers and sisters is saying that we can stay on the [Asian] side, we cannot pass to the European side.

"We are here to show Muslims are able to respond to them with a smart attitude", he added.

The alleged killer's horrific 73-page "manifesto" had mentioned Turks directly.

"With this attack, hostility towards Islam, that the world has been idly watching and even encouraging for some time, has gone beyond individual harassment to reach the level of mass killing", Erdogan said.

On Friday, terrorist Brenton Tarrant, also a self-professed white supremacist, wielding an armoury of semi-automatic rifles scrawled with racist ideology, walked into two mosques and unleashed a rampage that left at least 50 dead and dozens more with life-changing wounds.

Fuat Oktay's remarks came during his meeting with Winston Peters, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister of New Zealand. He was referring to comments by Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of Turkey's main opposition party, who said in a recent speech that the Islamic world "needs to sit and think: Why is there terror in my country?"
