The former three-term Texas congressman's haul put him at the top of a Democratic pack of more than a dozen candidates so far including Bernie Sanders, the independent US senator who sought the party's nomination in 2016.

O'Rourke gained national prominence from a 2018 U.S. Senate race that he lost. O'Rourke did not, however, reveal how many individual donors contributed to his campaign or their average donation.

The Texan's $6.1m mark in 24 hours put him ahead of even Bernie Sanders, whose small-donor fundraising prowess was thought to be unrivalled. The other closest 2020 Democratic contender to disclose his or her complete first-day fundraising total was Sen.

The $6.1 million haul edged past Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, whose campaign raised $5.9 million in the first day following his announcement last month. His underdog challenge to incumbent Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz attracted capacity crowds and record fundraising.

O'Rourke formally entered the presidential race Thursday morning. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Governor Jay Inslee of Washington, and former Governor John Hickenlooper of Colorado all reported raising $1 million over the first 48 hours of their respective campaigns.

O'Rourke, an El Paso Democrat, is the second Texan in the crowded Democratic primary to take on President Donald Trump.

NBC News reported that the remaining Democratic candidates have not yet reported their first-day hauls, but are required to issue their first Federal Election Commission disclosures at the end of the month.

In a statement, Mr O'Rourke said: "In just 24 hours, Americans across this country came together to prove that it is possible to run a true grassroots campaign for president". Bernie Sanders reported for his first day as a candidate.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Mr O'Rourke said he had no "large-dollar fundraisers planned" and was ruling out "taking any PAC [Political Action Committee] money or any lobbyist money ever".
