The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do. At one point he gazed around at the courtroom, which was packed with media. Tarrant did not apply for bail, and per ABC News reports, did not apply to have his name suppressed.

Brenton Tarrant, formerly of Grafton, was led into the court barefoot in a prison robe and handcuffs, and was not required to speak during his brief three-minute appearance.

"We're now in contact with the Muslim leadership in the community to come up with a safety plan for them", said Ehalt.

Police and military personnel walk at the carpark compound of the district court after Friday's mosque attacks, in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 16, 2019.

Another person who died was a Jordanian man, the former general secretary of the Canterbury Muslim Association, who "liked to serve the people and ... give advice".

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said authorities were investigating their ties to shootings that occurred as Muslims convened for Friday prayers, the busiest time for many mosques around the world.

In response to the attacks, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the massacre as a "terrorist attack" at a news conference, saying: "These are people who I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and in fact have no place in the world".

The attacks in two mosques in central Christchurch killed at least 49 people and injured 48 others.

"I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change".

The police said earlier on Saturday, that further charges would be laid against Tarrant over the mosque massacre.

He was not on a government watch list in either New Zealand or Australia. Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the man charged, or that Tarrant is the man who appears in a video that was livestreamed on Facebook depicting the attack from the vantage point of the gunman. Malaysia said two of its citizens were hospitalized, and the Saudi Embassy in Wellington said two Saudis were wounded.

A Saudi man, Mohsin Al-Mozaini was among the dead, AlArabiya reported. It was still unclear whether any other shooters were involved in the attacks.

Mohan Ilbrahim, a worshipper who witnessed one of the attacks inside a mosque told NBC's Today Show when he first heard the sound of the shots he thought it was "an electric short circuit" but soon realised it was a shooting after the windows began smashing.

"He had a big gun.He came and started shooting everyone in the mosque, everywhere", said the man, Ahmad Al-Mahmoud. He said they had disabled one and were in the process of disabling the second.

Facebook said, that having been alerted by police, it had deleted the gunman's accounts "shortly after the livestream commenced".

"The Minneapolis Police Department, under the direction of Chief Arradondo, have cultivated strong relationships with our religious leaders in each community in Minneapolis", Elder said in a statement.

Ardern said children were caught up in the attack and one of the injured was a two-year-old boy.

"They were not a resident of Christchurch".

Global media were packed outside the court before the hearing, along with heavily armed police and security staff.

He escaped out the back door and climbed over a wall when he saw people fleeing and realised what was happening.

Schools across the city were placed on lockdown, as well as the Christchurch hospital.
