Cabinet revolt over no-deal Brexit vote

UK lawmakers to vote on fresh referendum Labour leader Corbyn demands general election after Theresa May’s Brexit defeat

MPs will vote later on whether to block the United Kingdom from leaving the European Union without a deal on 29 March, after again rejecting the PM's withdrawal agreement.

He said: "We would obviously use that position as a starting point for any discussions but we would like to hear about the plans you are advocating and we are keen to see if there is scope to find common ground between our respective proposals and to work together to break the impasse".

But Mrs May said Labour's proposals have also been rejected by MPs and she noted Mr Corbyn appeared hesitant to back his own party's policy to move towards a second referendum.

On Thursday, shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the option of another referendum was still on the table.

Stephanie Peacock resigned from the whips office, saying she wanted to "respect the result of the 2016 vote" and her constituents in Barnsley East would expect her to "honour that promise".

What isn't clear is how the prime minister actually intends to dig herself out of this awful political hole. Mrs May has said Tory MPs will get a free vote.

"'No deal' would be catastrophic for the United Kingdom economy, so I will be voting to ensure this option is permanently taken off the table".

Following late night talks with the European Union, the prime minister urged lawmakers to back her "improved deal" or risk "no Brexit at all".

Meanwhile, Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, warned Tuesday that the European Union was no longer interested in negotiating a new deal.

Mrs May agreed but insisted her deal is a "good deal" and she wants the United Kingdom to leave with a good deal.

"I believe we have a good deal".

The idea of modifying the Brexit deal or delaying it has not been well received by the Prime Minister and the Conservative Party.

Theresa May is making a final bid to save her Brexit deal ahead of a crunch Commons vote. "Parliament must now take control of the situation".

It comes after the party tabled an amendment to the motion on Article 50 that makes no mention of a new vote. In addition, 10 Conservative MPs abstained, defying May.

Some of her colleagues around the Cabinet table think it shows she has to tack to a closer deal with the EU.

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house". "So can the prime minister tell us, exactly what her plan is now?"

The deal was defeated in the Commons on Tuesday evening by 149 votes.

On Wednesday morning the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

'The Government is in real problems because they are trying to fool the people into somehow believing that somehow or other the deal she has offered is the only one that is available'.
