"Bombogenesis is defined as a 24 mb drop in atmospheric pressure in 24 hours". This is a serious blizzard!

'We expect a major blizzard to unfold with winds likely to approach hurricane force, heavy snow and massive drifts, ' according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

This storm is not expected to bring those kind of conditions to Alabama, but it could kick off a few strong to severe storms as it pulls a cold from through the state on Thursday.

As the storm intensifies, heavy snow is expected from northern Colorado, including Denver, to western Nebraska, central South Dakota and southeastern North Dakota.

Schools across Colorado canceled classes ahead of the storm while Denver Public School District officials were considering closing school early on Wednesday, local media reported.

According to the Weather Channel, the winter storm is expected to increase in strength throughout Wednesday, with heavy winds and snow continuing into Thursday.

Travel may be impossible, CNN reports, and both flights and schools are being canceled in areas where the white-out blizzard may hit.

Another winter storm is brewing and could affect upward of 70 million people living in the Central and Northern Plains and the Upper Midwest.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms were expected to keep pushing eastward Wednesday from the Southern Plains to the lower to middle Mississippi Valley.

With hundreds of people stranded across the state of Colorado, the governor took action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service warned residents of Boulder, Colo. against traveling on Wednesday afternoon and evening, citing the possibility of icy roads, whiteout conditions, and strong winds, according to CNN.

Wyoming had closed state offices in Cheyenne, while South Dakota's governor ordered state offices closed in 39 central and western counties due to the storm. Strong wind gusts are forecast, possibly reaching 55 miles per hour. Winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour with gusts over 60 miles per hour are expected across parts of New Mexico, western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

In addition, flood watches have been issued across the Midwest and Great Plains amid concerns that heavy rains will melt snowpack and trigger significant flooding.
