The Latest: Senate votes to end US support of Yemen war Senate clears Yemen War Powers Resolution in rebuke to Trump

Yemen's warring sides were divided Thursday over a U.S. Senate vote to end America's support for the Saudi-led war in the impoverished country, with the Yemeni government condemning it and the Iran-backed rebels welcoming the development.

According to Al-Jazeera news reports, Senator Bernie Sanders said, "We have the opportunity to take a major step forward in ending the horrific war in Yemen and alleviating that awful, bad suffering being experienced by the people in one of the poorest countries in the world". Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the lead sponsor of the resolution, declaredfollowing the vote.

The resolution, which is co-sponsored by US Sens.

Trump's support for Saudi Arabia has been a point of tension with Congress since the killing of US -based journalist Jamal Khashoggi a year ago.

He added that a vote in favor would "begin the process of reclaiming our constitutional authority by ending United States involvement in a war that has not been authorized by Congress and is unconstitutional".

Lee was among seven Republicans who joined all members of the Democratic Caucus in backing the bill. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., right, speaks at a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, on a reintroduction of a resolution to end USA support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

US Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) recently told Washington-based publication The Hill that the vote could be "tight", but that the measure would be able to gain the required amount of vote to pass.

But when the House passed the resolution last month, an amendment offered by Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., exempted intelligence sharing from the bill.

"We should not be associated with a bombing campaign that the United Nations tells us is likely a gross violation of human rights", Murphy said on the Senate floor Wednesday. The resolution still must pass the House of Representatives. "The Senate's vote to end the USA role in Yemen is also a vote to re-democratize our nation's foreign policy".

The measure now goes to the House, which approved a very similar measure earlier this year, to be passed again. However, the White House has stated that if the resolution were to land on US President Donald Trump's desk, he would veto it.

In addition to arms, USA military experts have acted as advisers to the Saudi and Emirati command centers in Riyadh and elsewhere, and a US pullout could also impact intelligence gathering.

"Most of the advocacy around this war in the USA has focused on what we want the U.S.to stop doing - refuelling, selling arms, blocking Security Council actions, etc. ..." Five years of fighting has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis in the country.

Top Republicans Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn voted against the resolution.
