As a country, we are confident about the future, says Ireland’s Varadkar

President Donald Trump on Thursday sharply criticized Britain's handling of negotiations over leaving the European Union, saying the talks have been bungled and that the debate was dividing the country.

In a somewhat chaotic Oval Office press conference with the Taoiseach, Mr Trump said he intends to visit Ireland this year, renewed his pledge to build a border wall with Mexico and mocked his potential 2020 presidential rival, Irish-American politician Beto O'Rourke.

Mr Trump said he would like to see Brexit "work out", adding, "we are talking with them about trade and we can do a very big trade deal with the UK". "I hate to see everything being ripped apart now".

Varadkar said that Trump and he each have "a different opinion" of the decision to leave the European Union, and said, "I regret that Brexit's happening".

Mr Murphy and law society president Patrick Dorgan travelled to Washington DC where the Government's "Ireland: An worldwide legal centre" initiative was launched at the Irish Embassy as part of the St Patrick's Day celebrations.

"It's a very complex thing right now, it's tearing a country apart".

"I will be coming at some point this year", he said.

However, he later became critical of May's Brexit proposals; after European leaders endorsed her blueprint at a summit last November, he said the deal could disrupt the UK-US trade.

"It wasn't that I was a supporter". "I regret that Brexit's happening and the United Kingdom was a really important part of the European Union".

"And it's a shame that it has to be that way, but I think we will stay right in our lane".

Speaking on stage, US Chamber of Commerce chief executive Tom Donohue said that Ireland was able to improve its economy and employment because "it stuck to its tax rates". "But I think it could have been negotiated in a different manner".

Mr Varadkar is Ireland's first openly gay leader and one of very few openly gay national leaders in the world.

DONALD TRUMP will make his long-awaited visit to the Republic of Ireland later this year.

The Prime Minister has previously revealed that Mr Trump told her to "sue the EU" and "not go into negotiations".

Pence called Varadkar's remarks at Thursday's breakfast "inspiring words".

Varadkar said Ireland isn't the only place where this is possible, but "every country where freedom and liberty are cherished".

The event saw Varadkar present President Trump with the traditional bowl of shamrock as part of an annual ceremony that dates all the way back to the 1950s.
