Teens Who Use E-Cigarettes More Apt to Start Smoking, Study Says

TAMPA, USA - E-cigarettes are twice as effective as nicotine patches or gum at helping people quit smoking traditional cigarettes, according to major British study Wednesday, January 30, involving almost 900 people.

Smokers in the e-cigarette group received a $26 starter kit, while those in the nicotine-replacement group received a three-month supply of the product of their choice, costing about $159. And among participants who had issues with coughing and phlegm before the trial began, significantly fewer in the vaping group had those symptoms after a year.

So, might encouraging smokers to rely on e-cigarettes to help kick their habit raise the risk that quitters just end up swapping out one form of nicotine addiction for another? The finding that e-cigarettes are nearly twice as effective as NRTs is similar to the results of a survey that health psychologist Robert West and his colleagues conducted several years ago. It also was unable to examine how the association of e-cigarette use with cigarette initiation may vary by different products or use behavior patterns.

"But whatever the method, it's clear that using the support available from local Stop Smoking Services gives smokers the best chance of quitting".

They said staff at stop-smoking services have been too reluctant to endorse e-cigarettes, because they have been cautious about the evidence behind them. The 886 participants were divided into groups and given either e-cigarettes or nicotine replacements products as a tool to quit.

Overall, teens are four times more prone to trying traditional tobacco cigarettes if they've ever used an e-cigarette, the researchers said.

Lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek from Queen Mary University of London said: "This is the first trial to test the efficacy of modern e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit". Improved nicotine delivery helps account for the higher quit rate in the new study, which bodes well for Juul, the leading e-cigarette in the US market.

Only 10 per cent of those who tried nicotine patches, gum or sprays managed to quit - along with just three per cent of those who attempted to give up smoking unaided.

That might not seem like a huge success rate, but it's notoriously hard to quit smoking.

"Our high school tobacco use rate is about 21.6 percent, and that's a bit alarming, because we do know that e-cigarettes and e-cigarette use is at an all-time high, about 78 percent increase (from 2017 to 2018) in our high school who are choosing to use e-cigarettes", JoAnna Strother, director of advocacy for the American Lung Association in Arizona, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday.

"The youths initiating cigarettes through e-cigarettes represent a substantial public health challenge that may warrant stricter regulation of youths' access to e-cigarettes", the report says.

In the British study group, a total of 79 smokers were enrolled in an "e-cig group" and given a refillable e-cigarette to use.

The delay has come under intense criticism amid an explosion in teenage vaping, driven chiefly by devices like Juul, which resembles a flash drive.

The Harvard study published in Scientific Reports determined that two chemicals commonly used to flavor e-cigarettes may be harming the cilia, the antennae-like protrusions that line human airways to help keep them clean.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more about e-cigarettes and teenagers.

"We need more studies about their safety profile, and I don't think anyone should be changing practice based on one study", said Belinda Borrelli, a psychologist specializing in smoking cessation at Boston University.

Armitage, who has smoked for 15 years, said he also tried nicotine patches but found they irritated his skin.

Myth #3: E-cigarettes are just as risky as combustibles because they contain nicotine.
