Teen e-cigarette use linked to eventual smoking

"Anything which helps smokers to avoid heart disease and cancer and lung disease is a good thing, and e-cigarettes can do that, " said Peter Hajek, study co-author and an addiction specialist at Queen Mary University of London.

The multi-centre trial, which involved nearly 900 smokers who also received additional behavioural support, found that 18.0 per cent of e-cigarette users were smoke-free after a year, compared to 9.9 per cent of participants who were using other nicotine replacement therapies.

All participants received weekly one-on-one behavioural support for at least four weeks, with expired air carbon monoxide monitoring.

They were randomly given either a nicotine replacement treatment of their choice, or an e-cigarette starter pack with one or two refill bottles.

Despite all this, there's something about either e-cigarettes or the experience of vaping that appears to open the doorway for these particular kids, making them more likely to light up in the future, Stokes said.

But two editorials in the same publication threw some cold water on the trial's results.

Youth whose first use of a tobacco product was electronic cigarettes were more likely to initiate cigarette smoking over 2 years of follow-up in a newly reported study.

Przulj is a research health psychologist with the Health and Lifestyles Research Unit at Queen Mary University of London. "We fear that the creation of a generation of nicotine-addicted teenagers will lead to a resurgence in the use of combustible tobacco in the decades to come", said lead author Jeffrey Drazen, editor in chief of NEJM. Ideally, you'd want people to wean themselves off the nicotine and the potentially harmful toxins provided by e-cigarettes.

In the end, study results suggested that "e-cigarettes would nearly double your chances of quitting at one year compared to nicotine replacement [products]", she reported. Because e-cigarettes have improved since then, their advantages for smokers who choose them may be greater nowadays.

The results, reported yesterday in The New England Journal of Medicine, should encourage public health officials in the United States to embrace the harm-reducing potential of vaping, as their counterparts in the U.K. have been doing for years, rather than portraying e-cigarettes as a menace. They were also asked questions created to illuminate how prone they were toward risky behaviors and sensation-seeking.

InnokinA new British study provides the strongest evidence yet that e-cigarettes are more effective as a smoking cessation aid than other forms of nicotine replacement.

E-cigarettes have no tobacco, but contain nicotine-laced liquids that the user inhales in a vapor.

While some research (including by Levy) has cast doubt on the idea that teen vaping will cause more teen smoking, agencies like the Food and Drug Administration are pushing policies that will restrict flavored e-cigarettes from being widely available in stores or online.

Of those who had ever tried a cigarette, the researchers found that cigarette use by the 2015-2016 interval was higher among prior e-cigarette users (20.5 percent) and prior tobacco product users (21.1) compared to those who had not used tobacco before (3.8).

Borrelli noted that after one year, 80 percent of the e-cigarette users in the study were still using the devices. Therefore, when the FDA only approves nicotine replacement therapies (gum and patches) and not products that help smokers mimic the physical habits of smoking (deep breathing, hand to mouth contact, social rituals, having to go outside and taking a break from work), women don't find as much success with these products.

For now, Borelli added, "the best way to quit smoking right now is to use FDA-approved evidence-based treatment as a first-line choice".
