Speaking from a podium in central Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed the crowds for almost 45 minutes, lashing out at Iran's enemies - America and Israel - and claiming their efforts to "bring down" Iranians through sanctions will not succeed.

"We have not, and will not, request permission from anyone for increasing our defensive power and for building all kinds of. missiles", he told the crowd.

The leaders spoke at a rally marking 40 years since the Islamic revolution, a political quake that ended millennia of monarchy and still reverberates around the region.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday threatened the Iranian regime with destruction after an Iranian military leader warned that the Islamic Republic would raze major Israeli cities if the U.S. attacked it.

The revolution of February 11, 1979 marked the end of decades of rule by US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, whose authoritarian leadership, lavish lifestyle and Western-style reforms had united swathes of Iranians against him.

"Today the whole world should know that the Islamic Republic of Iran is considerably more powerful than the days of the war", Rouhani said. 40 years of repression.

In Washington, US National Security adviser John Bolton, who in 2017 expressed the hope that Iran's "revolution will not reach its 40th birthday", tweeted that after 40 years, the "Islamic Republic of Iran has failed to fulfil its promises to uphold and safeguard the rights of its citizens".

"If this regime makes the awful mistake and tries to destroy Tel Aviv or Haifa, it won't be successful and it will be the last anniversary of their revolution they will ever celebrate". 40 years of terror.

Iran even holds an annual "Death to America" rally every November to commemorate the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, leading to a 444-day hostage crisis in which the Iranian regime held 52 Americans prisoner. "The long-suffering Iranian people deserve a much brighter future", he posted in both English and Farsi.

The state has played up this year's anniversary as 40 is symbolic of maturity in the Islamic tradition and the age at which Prophet Mohammed received revelations from God.

The large turnout in state-sponsored rallies came as Iranians face mounting economic hardships.

State television offered blanket coverage of the commemorations, showing marches in cities ranging from Abadan in southwestern Iran to Mashhad in the northeast.

State TV showed crowds defying rainy weather and carrying Iranian flags while shouting anti-Israeli and anti-US slogans.

But efforts to burn American and Israeli flags were hindered by torrential rain. "They must leave the region", said Brig.

Those who took to the streets were bullish despite the economic problems in the country, made worse by Washington's punitive measures.

"At the revolution's 40 anniversary we are on top of scientific achievements like nanotechnology or accurate missiles", he said.
