Philip escaped without injury on January 17 when the Land Rover he was driving flipped in a collision with a vehicle close to the royals' Sandringham residence in eastern England.

He was unhurt but was checked by a doctor.

Just 48 hours after the accident, he was pictured driving without a seatbelt. The passenger in the Kia, however, Emma Fairweather, suffered a broken arm.

Prince Philip reportedly surrendered his licence to Norfolk Police, who are responsible for investigating the crash, though details of the investigation are yet to be released.

Philip, 97, voluntarily gave up his credentials to Norfolk Police on Saturday.

The UK's Prince Philip, 97, has made a decision to "voluntarily surrender" his driving licence following a crash last month, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

Prince Philip has surrendered his driver's license.

Buckingham Palace says Prince Philip the husband of Queen Elizabeth II had been in a traffic accident and is not injured.

"The investigation file for the (January 17) collision has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for their consideration", it added. It won't have been easy for him to make as it is a loss of independence. At the time, women were banned from driving in Saudi Arabia.

"So I suspect this won't have been a decision which he has taken lightly".

The Duke of Edinburgh, 97, was behind the wheel of his Land Rover when it collided with a Kia occupied by two women and a nine-month-old baby.

She said she was "chuffed" to receive the response, after earlier noting a lack of direct communication with the Prince in interviews with other United Kingdom media outlets.

"It was a bright sunny day and at about three in the afternoon, the sun was low over the Wash".

The note, reported by the Sunday Mirror, said: "I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident at the Babingley cross-roads".

While there is no upper age limit for drivers in the United Kingdom, those over 70 must submit to testing every three years.

DVLA figures from 2017 show that 100,281 people over the age of 90 hold valid licences, while 248 people over 100 years old have a licence.
