The company has not stated that this is an example of a product that it will launch, but instead has indicated that the device will allow people to experience 5G speeds. The company's CEO has already said it wants to offer 5G on a handset that'll cost less than £1,000 - something the big boys likely won't do.

OnePlus has confirmed that it will be bringing a 5G smartphone to Mobile World Congress 2019, though don't expect it to go up for sale. OnePlus encourages attendees to experience a 5G smartphone prototype at a booth run by Qualcomm at MWC 2019. The invitation curiously emphasises "5G gaming" as an example of what it will show off, which could indicate that the actual 5G phone that launches later this year might be aimed at gamers.

While this might not be the finished OnePlus 7, it'll be showing us just what that phone will be capable of doing if it does end up launching with 5G.

Naturally, the device will be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform and X50 modem, since 5G connection requires both.

With major cellphone makers like Samsung, Apple, and Google lagging behind in the 5G-ready smartphone race, it seems OnePlus is planning to pick up the slack.

OnePlus isn't the only company to demo a 5G prototype phone.

OnePlus recently announced its "Connect with the OnePlus Community over 5G" event at the mobile tech show.
