Law enforcement is asking for the public's help in locating the birth mother who left the baby in the middle of the road about halfway between Roads 35 and 36.

Fuentes told the Fresno Bee her umbilical cord was still attached.

KFSN-TV reports the hours-old baby was wearing only a onesie when a newspaper carrier found her before dawn Monday on the center line of the road in Madera County.

Fuentes immediately called 911, and an emergency operator advised that he pick the baby up.

In the middle of the road sat a squirming bundle; the 21-year-old could hear the screams over his vehicle radio, turned low as he delivered newspapers in Madera Ranchos, Calif., early Monday, per the Fresno Bee.

An investigation has been launched to find out who abandoned the newborn baby.

"It could've been worse because out its pitch black its pitch black there could've been coyotes there's cars going by fast down that road", Fuentes told KFSN-TV.

A man was walking in a rural area at Avenue 13 1/2 near Road 28 about 4:30 a.m. when a woman approached him in her SUV.

First responders - including a fire truck, ambulance and officers from the Madera Country Sheriff's Office - soon arrived and rushed the baby via ambulance to Valley Children's Hospital, where it was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, according to a Facebook post by the Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information on the case is being asked to contact the Madera County Sheriff's Office at 559-675-7770.

She is described by witnesses as a Hispanic female adult, possibly in her early 20's.

The child was taken to hospital and is said to be in good health. She was last seen fleeing the scene in the small SUV of unknown make or model, authorities said.

Drop-off points include designated fire stations and hospitals.
