Gabriel has conceded that there was a need for "sensitivity and respect" from athletes in their interactions.Gabriel was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct which relates to "personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an global match", which took his accumulated demerit points to eight.

Umpires Rod Tucker and Kumar Dharmasena spoke to Gabriel after the finish of the Test and he was charged with breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC's code of conduct.

After the drubbing in the first two Test matches, England have finally found form in the 3rd Test against West Indies at St Lucia.

While speaking to the media after stumps, Root was asked to share what Gabriel said but he evaded the question saying instead, "It's Test cricket and (Gabriel) is an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a Test match".

Gabriel's initial remarks weren't aired during the third Test, but Root was heard telling him "there is nothing wrong with being gay". It will be adjudicated upon in the first instance by ICC match referee Jeff Crowe.

"Language is really influential and it's great Joe Root stepped up to challenge abusive comments".

"Don't use that as an insult. I know there are people who think the opposite and think it is good for the game but sometimes in the heat of battle things are said, when guys given a bit of time to sit down and think about it would give themselves a bit of a kick up the backside".

England captain Joe Root celebrates reaching his century.

"The ICC have got to handle things and I am not in a position to comment but throughout the series it has been played in the right manner between the two sides".

Former England wicketkeeper Steven Davies, who came out as gay in 2011, wrote on Twitter: "There is no room in the game for any form of discrimination.... For me his twelve words as a role model will be in the end more important than a test hundred or possible victory".

There was also praise for Root from worldwide rugby referee Nigel Owens who came out in 2007.

Richard Pybus, the West Indies coach said nothing has been reported yet, but the team will review the incident and address what could be done.
