Janelle Monae Applauds Jump in Grammy Nominations for Women

2019 Grammys marked by drama and drop-outs Janelle Monae Applauds Jump in Grammy Nominations for Women

Monae was also joined by songwriter Linda Perry, the first women nominated for non-classical producer of the year in 15 years and rapper-singer Tierra Whack, who scored a nomination for best music video for her "Mumbo Jumbo".

It's always something of a coup when a genre album or single makes an appearance in the big four categories and Carlile's competition will be steep.

The singer, who sent the tweets just hours before the highly anticipated release of her album Thank U, Next, is up for two awards this year: best pop solo performance for God Is a Woman, and best pop vocal album for Sweetener.

Lady Gaga scooped up five nominations including for both Record and Song of the Year for her heart-pounding hit Shallow, which she performed in the film A Star Is Born with co-star Bradley Cooper. That's in contrast to last year's ceremony, where male acts dominated in nominations and the only woman competing for the top award, Lorde, didn't get a chance to perform onstage. Beyonce, Jay-Z, Ella Mai, H.E.R., Hugh Jackman, Stingy, Shaggy, Dave Chappelle, "Weird Al" Yankovic, the late Chris Cornell, Greta Van Fleet and even former President Jimmy Carter also picked up early awards ahead of the live show, which was scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m.

"This is going to be a special Grammys". "I relax more ... when I know that I am supported by other women ... and I feel like I can do anything".

The three-and-a-half hour extravaganza will feature performances from nominees Chloe X Halle, Grammy-winner Lady Gaga (choosing this over the Bafta film awards), fellow victor Mark Ronson and Grammy nominee Travis Scott fresh off his performance at Super Bowl LIII. Regardless, the performers are Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, Dolly Parton, Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monáe, Brandi Carlile, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Ricky Martin, Arturo Sandoval, Young Thug, Chloe x Halle, Mark Ronson and Dan + Shay. "As much as it is about me, it's not just about me", said Monae, who gave a powerful speech a year ago ahead of Kesha's emotional and striking performance celebrating sisterhood and women's rights.

"When they don't take home the big prize", he said, "the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad". Other big stars also won't be in attendance, including Kendrick Lamar, the top nominee with eight, and Drake, nominated for seven awards.

The lead up to this year's Grammys hasn't been completely smooth though. He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and his much-criticized remarks forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity.

Taylor Swift, who has just one nod for her best-selling 2017 album "Reputation", is filming in London.

We couldn't be more excited to see what the 15-time Grammy victor does with this year's show - and we know she's pretty psyched about it too!
