Before Rickie Fowler shook off a shocking triple bogey on his 11th hole and won his first Waste Management Phoenix Open title Sunday, he received a special text the night before.

Rickie Fowler survived a nervy back nine on Sunday to shoot a three-over 74, out-dueling Branden Grace down the stretch to win the Phoenix Open for his fifth US PGA Tour title.

On the final hole, Fowler hit his third shot to three feet and then tapped in the victor for his first victory since the 2017 Honda Classic.

Fowler was cruising to his first win for nearly two years as he held a five-shot advantage despite being one over for the day after 10 holes, but the tournament turned on its head in the space of two holes as Fowler triple-bogeyed 11 and bogeyed 12 just as Grace made back-to-back birdies to snatch the lead.

After dropping twice and having the ball roll back into the water, Fowler placed the ball on the short grass and prepared to play what would be his fifth shot.

After a discussion with PGA Tour rules official Slugger White, he took another penalty drop and did remarkably well to chip to 15 feet and hole the putt for a weird triple-bogey seven. Fowler got up-and-down from there, knocking in a 17-foot putt for triple-bogey 7 - his seventh double bogey or worse when playing with a 54-hole lead.

Finding composure from the disastrous run of holes, Fowler made two consecutive pars before taking on the par-five 15th in two and converting a two-putt birdie to pull back level with the South African.

He held the 54-hole lead here twice before, including past year when he finished in a tie for 11th. It was his first win since the 2017 Honda Classic and first in Scottsdale at a tournament he has come oh-so-close to winning several times. "There have been plenty of good finishes, but too many second-place finishes".

But Grace was unable to go at the 15th green in two after pushing his drive into trouble, and Fowler followed up a good drive with a solid second to the heart of the putting surface to set up a priceless two-putt birdie which lifted him back into a share of the lead on 16 under.

"That was a big kind of turnaround", Fowler said after the tournament. And so then you kind of look at things in a positive light and just say, hey, all right, we'll go see what we can figure out and make the best of the situation.

Fowler then drove the green on 17 and made birdie to get to 17-under and go up by two shots.

However, when he attempted a straightforward pitch, his ball skidded through the green, narrowly missing a bunker before rolling into the water.

"It was a bit of a rollercoaster", said Fowler.
